This is the destiny of those who stand for others. Their honor will be bought in blood and pain. The Camp Ryder Hub is broken. Lee is nowhere to be found, and his allies are scattered across the state, each of them learning that their missions will not be as easy as they thought. Inside the walls of Camp Ryder, a silent war is brewing, between those few that still support Lee's vision of rebuilding, and the majority that support Jerry's desire for isolation. But this war will not remain silent for long. And in this savage world, everyone will have to make a choice. To keep their morals. Or keep their lives.

The Remaining Fractured (Audible Audio Edition) D J Molles Christian Rummel Audible Studios Books

"Fractured" is book four in "The Remaining" series, published in 2014. Reading the previous three books in the series is a must before reading "Fractured."

"Fractured" begins with what appears to be a hopeless state of affairs. Camp Ryder has been taken over by the despot Jerry, our brave heroes are off on missions facing seemingly impossible odds, and Lee is nowhere to be found, betrayed and left for dead in a hostile world. As usual, author D.J. Molles waists no time in getting the action up and running, and what follows is a breathless tale, just as readers have experienced in the other books in the series.

Molles deftly handles the several story threads, and gives each the time they deserve. A few times I found myself wanting to get back to certain threads sooner, but Molles gets back to each one in due course. Characterization in the series continues to improve, as we see characters reaching their breaking points and being profoundly affected by prolonged exposure to such a brutal environment. Speaking of brutality, Molles pulls no punches when it comes to violence or gore, and also is not afraid to kill off or radically change favorite characters. A few times I wondered if the line was being crossed when it came to violence, but it does serve to make the novel more jarring and visceral; there is also an overabundance of bad language. I also felt that the book was lacking a tad in fights with the infected, but the wranglings of the survivors still made for entertaining reading.

However, any complaints I have are small and are more than made up for by the quality of the novel. Molles continues to improve the novels, creating more complexity, better characterization, and crafting a tale that readers will really come to care about. Looking forward to tackling book five in the series, "Allegiance."

NOTE: Before proceeding to book five of the series, I would encourage you to read the two novellas "Trust" and "Faith." Although "Faith" is included in the Kindle version of book 1 of the series, it was actually originally released between book four and five.

In Summation:

The Good:
-great action
-increasing plot complexity
-balances story threads well
-better characterization

The Bad:
-violence too brutal?
-overuse of bad language
-could use more zombie fights

The Remaining Fractured (Audible Audio Edition) D J Molles Christian Rummel Audible Studios Books Reviews

I am not yet finished with this book but so far it is well written and suspenseful & action packed. I find myself rooting for and against the characters. I have read the series up to this point and I have not wanted to read anything else since I started reading this book series. I feel I will be dissappointed when the series is done and I'll have to start looking for another series to read. I love the subject matter, post - apocalyptic, not quite zombie population (which feels more believable) para military warlords, radical extremist christian kill squads, selfish, manipulative, sociopathic leaders (sounds just like Washington politicians doesn't it?) Great reads if you like this genre of books.
'Cause that's not what usually happens. So many novel series start off well, and then they start a slow descent into mediocrity. Not so with this series - it is a cracker right from the get go.

I read the first three novels in quick succession - and thoroughly enjoyed them all. Then there was a break. I had been to see the movie World War Z and left that particular movie thinking 'hmm maybe I am over this whole end of days, zombie thing'. How wrong I was. I saw that Fractured had just been released - curosity got the better of me and I did the whole 'take a peek' thing. Truth be told I then reread the last few pages of the third book to refresh my memory. The memories came flooding back.

What you need to know about Fractured. It is great! Yes it has Zombies and they have an important role in the story - but they are not the whole story. I liken it to a tale about surviving in the wilderness - the risk of animal attack is all too real - but they are a back drop to the main story, survival. Fractured is full of real life people - with real life strengths, frailties, reactions and motives. There is action a plenty. Nothing comes easy ( and nor should it) and the struggles and battles seem very real-life. The story is at its very best when it focusses on Lee ( and Deuce or course). Lee is a multifaceted and very likeable main character.

The book is also well edited - a rarity in the world of self published novels.

If you are new to The Remaining series - you are in for a great ride. You may as well buy all four novels at once 'cause I guarantee you won't stop at one. If you have already read the first three - don't hesitate - jump into episode four.

My faith in zombie and TEOTWAWKI stories has been restored.
This series keeps getting better and better. I've been waiting for book 4 of The Remaining series to come out for months now. I loved the first three so much that I recommended them to everyone, and this one didn't disappoint. I slammed through this book, reading it all in less than 12 hours. Mollies is amazing with this series and I can't wait to read what he has in store for the next book.

This one centered a little more on the outlying characters and their missions instead of Lee. I thought that brought a great balance to the book. They all had their fair share of personal struggles. Lee's story was hard to read. The strong "hero" of the first three books, while still great and able to do what he needs to do to survive, is caught in a string of crappy situations. While I was saddened by the things he faced, it was good to see that Molles took a different approach that other authors have. Usually, you have the guy who doesn't get hurt and who helps everyone else, but Lee's situations brought him down to "normal people" level, while other characters stepped up into that "hero" role. It was amazing.

A fantastic addition to The Remaining series. I cannot wait until the 5th book.
